Prepping for Free Agency

With the Super Bowl almost a full week behind us, all around the NFL teams are eyeing the beginning of free agency in March. Several big names are about to hit the market, so let’s take a look at the top three according to NFL.com, as well as some commentary and possible moves.

Ndamukong Suh: Known as one of the dirtiest players in the league, Suh’s time with Detroit has more than likely ended with their season. After the close of the season, rumors were swirling that he would sign with the Giants or Jets. However, the Giants already have a pretty solid tackle situation behind players like Cullen Jenkins and Jay Bromley. However, Suh has other plans. Sources say he wants to play for the Seahawks, but they have enough on their hands already with resigning Russell Wilson. Most likely are the Raiders– they are in a dire position and need to spend to win, meaning they’ll probably overbid on this much coveted player. (Source)

Justin Houston: As Sports World News points out, the NFL is in a golden age of passing. With guys like Brady, Luck, and Wilson at the helm of their respective franchises, one thing is clear: once you’ve got a solid QB, you do not let him go. Consequently there seems to be a shortage of premier passers. This means teams need to go for the next best thing: premier pass rushers. While J.J. Watt sits atop the league’s best defensive players, Justin Houston makes a case for close second. The OLB for Kansas City is a dominating presence on the field. His high level of play, combined with this consistent on field cool (he hasn’t been penalized in two years!) could be all the difference for a stumbling defense.

Dez Bryant: Elite players command elite money. The Dallas Cowboys have two. One in superstar running back DeMarco Murray, and the other in Bryant. While he is hitting the market, Bryant has made it clear that he wants to stay with the ‘Boys, and there are plenty of rumors that the Dallas club may be willing to franchise this excellent wide receiver. However, Dallas brass will probably do best to learn from history. Top paid wide receivers have tended to falter in the subsequent seasons: just ask Percy Harvin and Mike Wallace.
